Planning to pack for Colorado, NYC, Vancouver or any place that has real winter this year?
Well if you are from Miami, where we don’t have real snowmen and decorate palm trees while applying sunblock to our noses, you’ll probably need some help with packing…
Layers, Layers, and More Layers! 
Start with your basic long sleeved tees in your preferred colors (I suggest dark, especially for traveling), leggings, and thick socks. Then add on your winter necessities, like scarves, hats, sweaters, sweatpants, and gloves. Stick with chunky knits that are not only stylish, but essential to keeping you warm. Add one heavy duty coat and you should be good to go. Jackets filled with down feathers and that are waterproof are a great option and they fold well.
But, what about shoes?
Listen, sorry to break it to you, but you are going to have to trade your flip flops for some weatherproof boots when you encounter real winter! Try to stick to a neutral color that goes with everything so you don’t have to lug multiple pairs along. Brands such as Timberland and Sorel make some great options and are found in most stores and online.
But, what about the kids?
Follow the same rules that I mentioned above. While the thought of wrangling your children into layers of clothing may have the same feel as wrestling an alligator, it has to be done when you experience real winter weather. Another thing to keep in mind is that every time you step into a restaurant or store, the heat is on! So to avoid losing a beloved glove or hat, consider carrying a ziploc in your Mom purse, to catch everything and make sure nothing is lost.
This sounds like real winter clothes are going to cost a fortune!
Not to worry, looking on places like Pinecrest Marketplace or shopping at discount stores like Burlington Coat Factory and Old Navy can save you money. Also, borrowing from friends and family is a great option. Honestly, considering doing this for the children’s jackets and ski clothing. Not only do children grow like weeds, the weather in Miami isn’t going to change. So why invest in something that isn’t practical for your everyday life?
