Vacation: How to Make Long-Lasting Connections with Your Children

What if taking a vacation brought out the most impactful ways to grow our relationships with our children?

I once thought that to have a fun, relaxing and refreshing vacation I had to be alone–most importantly, with no kids. I was totally wrong. Here are some tips I’ve learned for making the most of time off work, even when it’s still time-on as a mom.

Planning Your Vacation

Preparing for your vacation together by getting the details right, first brings unity to your family and empowers your children to be involved. This helps them fully invest in the trip and builds the excitement for going away, while also fostering an awareness that this trip is for both of you. A good example of “teamwork makes the dream work” for the kiddos.

After taking out all of the necessary items for your child’s suitcase, have them pack it on their own. Have your child choose one or two items that they want to add. Toys, special blankets or their favorite socks are good here. The point is to create a sense of responsibility and anticipation for your special trip.

Learning Can Happen Anywhere

Kids are constantly learning. Vacations are a huge part of making learning FUN!

Try to learn something about where you’re going on vacation and relating it back to your children. Practical, real-world learning is the best kind and one of my goals as a mom is to raise kids who love experiencing new things and visiting new places.

Our Disney trip was the perfect place to be, as we had loads of fun and brought the educational factor to our vacation.

Build Long-Lasting Connections With Your Kids

Making memories in new places are effective ways to connect on a deeper level with your children. Some moms are with their children all day, but sometimes we tend to forget that it is not about the quantity of time we spend with them but the quality of time we have with them.

Vacation helps us disconnect from our daily distractions (work, school, emails) and make it easier for us to dedicate 100% of our time and energy to our children. One way you can seize the opportunity and build a long-lasting connection is to turn off your phone. Build connections that last by getting out of your busy routine and into quality time with your kids.

Taking a vacation naturally slows us down. Mommas, be in the moment and enjoy it with the most important people in your life: your children. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture all the wonders along the way.

Getting Through Difficult Times

I’ve been battling cancer for almost three years. Sometimes the memories of this tiring journey can be overwhelming. But one thing we will never regret is taking time to get away on vacation as a family.

Well after our vacation we love to bring out the family photos and videos and relive the moments reminiscing about all the good times we had together. This brings a beautiful perspective to life and an awareness of how much God has done for us. Life no longer seems difficult or sad, but joyful and hopeful!

Getting away is so important for us mommas. Mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. The best part of it all is that it teaches us the value of life and brings us to a realization of how blessed and favored we truly are.
