Safely Navigating the Internet with your Children

Who else feels terrified with the latest news on harmful content some children and parents have encountered while watching videos on the internet? Do you feel overwhelmed by this and other scary news around the risks our own children are exposed to when navigating the digital world? You are not alone! I feel that way too and many moms I know also share these fears.

As a mother of two very young children, I do my best to create healthy digital habits. I try to provide limited screen time, high-quality educational content and co-viewing as much as possible. My husband and I have carefully chosen the digital content that we are comfortable exposing our children to. However, with the digital world becoming more and more important and time-consuming in our day-to-day lives, and more and more consuming, many times I wonder if there are other ways to maintain a balance when it comes to digital content consumption. I want to protect my little ones, today and in the future, from the risks associated with it.

Challenges and threats in the digital world are rapidly evolving.

Comcast’s Xfinity Internet xFi Advantage service is raising the bar by helping moms manage our digital homes and in-home WiFi networks with additional security and value, including:

  • Helping reduce the risk of our children accessing age-inappropriate content from their devices with xFi Parental Controls.
  • Giving parents ultimate control of our in-home networks with the ability to instantly pause WiFi access to any and all connected devices at any time – perhaps during dinner time. This can help moms make sure they are getting undivided attention from family member and promote quality time together.
  • Parents can also use the Bedtime feature to automatically schedule device-free time when kids need to get to sleep or set time limits for screen time by user or device. How convenient and helpful are these features for parents!

This is what the Comcast Xfinity xFi Dashboard looks like. It helps you view and manage internet activity across all smart devices connected to your home network.

Additional Features of the xFi Advantage Gateway

  • Allowing parents to easily see all the devices using their home networks, manage user and device profiles and instantly get alerts when new devices log on. These personalization and control options are made possible by Comcast’s most intelligent and secure gateway, the Xfinity xFi Advanced Gateway.
  • Optimizing our network’s performance with ongoing home WiFi assessments. These may include recommendations to add xFi Pods to help eliminate dead zones so we enjoy consistent WiFi coverage throughout the entire house.
  • xFi Advantage is available to South Florida Xfinity internet customers who subscribe to a service with speeds of 250 Mbps or above for $15 a month. Customers with a lower-speed internet service can add xFi Advantage for $55 a month.
  • Offering us an additional service option, xFi Advanced Security, to keep all our connected and “smart” devices protected from malicious websites and hackers. This service can protect all sorts of devices, including mobile phones, laptops, desktop computers, smart television sets, voice assistants like Amazon Echo or Google Home, security cameras, thermostats, door locks, and other smart-home devices. Powered by artificial intelligence, xFi Advanced Security flags anything that looks suspicious and sends you notifications through the xFi app when a potentially harmful issue has been resolved or avoided. This feature also prevents remote access to our devices from unknown sources. With no extra hardware or software required, you can get add this service for just $5.99 a month.

  1. My kids are young and don’t spend much time on the computer, but I love the idea of the pause WiFi and bedtime features to help us grown-ups better manage our own screen time 😉 We’re already Comcast customers, so I’m looking forward to giving these family-friendly features a try!

    • I’m with you, Lynda! Managing screen time for everyone in the family is such a challenge. But I’m so glad we have Comcast. The WiFi pause during dinner is my favorite feature!

    • Absolutely agree! That’s the challenge of raising children in the digital age. Family time needs to come first!

  2. Loving all of these Xfinity xFi Features. As a mom, I always like to stay on top of my girls and what they watch on their tablet, but these features give me more peace of mind.

    • Aren’t these amazing? This is the kind of support we need to set healthy limits and monitor the digital content our kids consume.

  3. This has been a topic of conversation the past few weeks with friends, fellow moms and my middle school students. We are working on a campaign to educate younger children about what they have in their hands. It’s crazy to think that little people have access to the world when given a phone or device and too many parents don’t monitor or teach them how to use them. Thanks for a great article!!

    • Thank you for reading it! Technology is great but the content we can have access to, is not always the best. As parents we need to find ways to set limits and filter the content our kids consume. I think it’s never too early to create healthy habits when it comes to using technology in a balanced way.

  4. I currently have Comcast in my home and I love their xFi app. It helps me control what my kids are doing online and helps me limit their screen time. It can be so hard as a busy mom to always stay on top of them, so it’s great to know that Comcast has our back and gives us tools to help.
