September is Self-Care Awareness Month--Prioritize Caring for You! Sharonda Stewart Contributor Miami Moms Blog

Did you know that September is Self-Care Awareness Month? I had no idea that there was actually a month dedicated to reminding us to take care of ourselves. It is crazy that we even have to remind ourselves to take care of our bodies but in today’s world, we have to do just that. Everything and everyone is moving at one hundred miles per hour and honestly, I find it hard to keep up.

As moms, we often put everyone’s needs before our own. We have to manage the kids, the house, the jobs, the pets and everything else in between. Taking time out for myself wasn’t even a thought until my kids got older but boy was I wrong. I think most of us moms think we have to do it all and not ask for help. Or we feel guilty that we need a break. It is important to realize that we can’t pour from an empty cup.

Self-care is simply practicing being good to yourself. Honoring your body, soul, and needs and not feeling guilty about it. It is listening to those subtle signs that are telling you to slow down, breathe and take a moment for yourself.  It’s about saying no to the things that don’t work for you and saying yes to the things that do.

How to Practice Self-Care

Everyone can benefit from practicing self-care. Trust me, mommy burnout is real! Here are some ways that you can make self-care part of your daily routine. I challenge you to do at least one thing a day in honor of yourself. Remember that it is perfectly okay to focus on you, Momma!

  1. Thanks for this reminder. I am often wondering how retirees, even though they’re not working a full time job, would have a problem finding time to take care of themselves. It’s really a commitment you must make. I connected with at least 4 of the suggestions you listed. My problem is consistence. LOL
