Winter Fun: Rediscover Miami in the Cold

0

Miami is known for its warm weather and sunny skies but a few times a year we enjoy some chilly days. And there are places that are actually better or simply different when it’s a bit cold outside. Here are some ideas about places to rediscover in the city on those “Miami winter” days.

Zoo Miami

Half an hour away from downtown you’ll find Zoo Miami, home to more than 3,000 animals. It is the oldest and largest zoo in the State of  Florida and the only American zoo located in a subtropical region. Because of its unique weather, Zoo Miami is able to host animals from the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Around its grounds, you’ll also find more than 1,000 tree species!

The zoo is a wonderful place for those who love walking, but if your family is in more of a pedaling mood you can rent a safari cycle starting from  $26+tax for 2 hours. You can also ride on a duck or swan pedal boat around the lake starting at $15+tax. Wheelchairs and strollers are always available.

On a sunny, winter day you can have a picnic at one of the many designated picnic areas or grab lunch or a snack from one of the many kiosks located throughout the park.

Check the Zoo Miami calendar for a list of upcoming events.

The Gold Coast Railroad Museum

Located just across the Zoo Miami parking lot you’ll find the Gold Coast Railroad Museum–a train fanatics’ heaven and home to more than 40 historic railcars.  The museum offers free admission on the first Saturday of every month, and there are many events that take place at the museum throughout the year.  Those few “winter” days are perfect for a visit to this local gem.
