Miami Moms Blog’s Local Nonprofits Guide: How to Give Back in Miami

Rachael Russell Saiger & Isabela Grutman :: Working Moms Spotlight miami moms blog

Miami Moms Blog, Miami’s Premier Parenting Resource, is thrilled to announce our Guide to Local Nonprofits.

This guide features non-profit organizations in Miami that are impacting women, children, and families.

Written & Curated by: Valerie Barbosa

As part of Miami Moms Blog’s mission to encourage, equip, and empower moms in our beloved city of Miami, we want to make it easier for you to support other moms and children in need.

Inspired by the love we feel for them, we have put together a very special guide as a resource to raise awareness about amazing non-profit organizations championing causes that are very close to our hearts.

The following organizations have been researched by our team and we believe they are causes worthy of our support. Every quarter we will highlight 5 nonprofits in Miami and feature 1 of those nonprofits in our Moms on Purpose initiative.

Moms on Purpose is a quarterly opportunity for local Moms to serve at the featured nonprofit organization. These events will provide local Moms with a chance to serve and expose their children to the joy of giving to others. Our first Moms on Purpose event will be December 3, 2019 at Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® South Florida

Can you imagine a family experiencing the suffering of a seriously ill or injured child? Besides the emotional and financial weight of their situation, many families need to also endure long commutes or trips to get their child treated and spend long seasons apart given the distance between the hospital and their home. Sometimes siblings spend months without seeing their sick brother or sister.

Since 1982, the Ronald’s McDonald’s House in South Florida has been providing a “home away from home” to more than 350 families a year with sick children that are receiving treatment at the Jackson Memorial Hospital. Located right across the hospital, this House provides home-cooked meals, private bedrooms and playrooms for children at no cost, allowing families to stay together through such difficult times.

There are many simple ways to support this wonderful cause. Some of the RHMC South Florida programs include:

  • Share a Night: Sponsor a family staying at the house for as little as $20.
  • Wish List: Here you will find a list of basic household items and gift cards that you can donate to benefit a family staying in the House.
  • Donate at McDonald’s restaurants: You can round up your bill at any McDonald’s restaurant in South Florida to make a donation.

Join us for our 1st Moms on Purpose event at Ronald McDonald House Charities on December 3, 2019. We will have the opportunity to serve dinner to the families at Ronald McDonald House South Florida. This event is designed for Moms and children ages 7 and up. Space is limited, please RSVP as soon as possible.

miami moms blog nonprofits guide miami diaper bank

According to the National Diaper Bank Network, 1 in 3 U.S. families in America can’t afford enough diapers to keep their baby or child clean, dry, and healthy. Disposable diapers can cost $70 to $80 per month per child and since there are no state or federal programs that support the purchase of diapers for low-income families, these parents often find themselves having to decide between purchasing diapers or providing food for their little ones.

Thankfully, we have Miami Diaper Bank in our city to spearhead the collection and distribution of diapers and other diaper related products to families in need. In addition to providing clean diapers to families, the organization’s objective is to generate awareness among our community on the terrible consequences many parents and their babies in need of diapers experience and the importance of diaper donations across Florida.

Ways you can support Miami Diaper Bank:

  • Donate your leftover diapers or make a monetary donation.
  • Host your own diaper drive or to collect donations or play date to spread awareness.
  • Host a Hero Box at your church, school, or office.
  • Follow & Share about Miami Diaper Bank on social media.
  • Volunteer at a Miami Diaper Bank event (Children 10+ are welcome and can receive service hours) Sign up for the Volunteer Email Newsletter: [email protected]
voices for children miami moms blog

Did you know that more than 2,000 children in Miami don’t have a parent or an adult that provide them with safety, stability and love? Most of these children have been abandoned, neglected and/or abused. Because of this, these children have been placed in foster care.  These children live temporarily in a full-time care facility or another family’s home, until one of the parents can resume their responsibility or until an adoptive home is found for them.

Voices For Children raises funds to ensure that every child in the foster care system in Miami-Dade County, has a court-appointed Guardian ad Litem (GAL), who serves as a voice that will act in the child’s best interest throughout court proceedings. The organization’s financial support also helps to provide for children’s health, educational and social needs.

amigos for kids miami moms blog

Amigos for Kids is a nonprofit that exists to prevent child abuse and neglect in our city. Besides conducting one of the city’s largest holiday toy drives, Amigos for Kids developed an education platform to build a stronger community of families that respect and value their children in order to prevent abuse and neglect. This framework includes an After-School Program at José Martí Park that serves children ages 6 – 11 daily, and an evidenced-based Nurturing Parents Program with parenting workshops that serve families in the city.

Miami Moms Blog was on site at José Martí Park when Amigos for Kids recently teamed up with Comcast to surprise a room full of students with new computers. Read more here and watch the video of the kids’ reaction!

salty saves miami moms blog non profits guide

We love this nonprofit’s statement, “where fashion meets philanthropy.” Style Saves works hard to provide students and their families with clothes and essential items not only for their day-to-day but also for specific moments that are important in their lives such as holidays, graduations, proms and back to school.

Earlier this year the organization hosted their annual Style Saves Swim fashion show fundraiser to provide 7,500 students in Miami the opportunity to shop for uniforms and school supplies. In their Holiday Giveback events Style Saves has distributed 1,000 gifts to students from homeless shelters and foster care in our area.

Miami Moms Blog recently interviewed the Founders of Style Saves, Rachel Russell Saiger and Isabela Grutman in our Working Moms Spotlight Series. Read their full interview here.
